MUST HAVE: A 6 Man Tent

Every household should own a 6 Man Tent. As a longtime outdoorsman, and enthusiast of camping trips with the family and friends, a six man tent is the epitome of space and comfort.

If you’ve ever gone camping, you know the feeling of limited space, claustrophobia, and late night diggers, tripping over everyone who is sleeping. It is in this regard that the 6 man tent is probably the most coveted and most economical tent to purchase. Even if your yearly camping trip consists of 4 people, you’ll have plenty of extra storage space.

The Best 6 Man Tents on the Market

The three tents I have listed are the best 6 man tents I have personally tested in the field. Of course I mean on my own adventures, and not professionally, however, they are tried and true. I will add more as I test more. I have listed the prices that they retail for, but they can be found much cheaper online.

Personal preference is one deciding factor as is usability. A 6 Man Tent typically means that there is enough room for 6 people. This does not include camping or hiking gear, bikes, food, etc. This must be taken into consideration. A 6 Man tent is quite large and will get the job done, but and if you dont mind leaving some of your gear outside of the tent, you should be fine. As for now, the best 6 Man Tents are:

6 Man Tent (Mountain Hardwear)
6 Man Tent (Mountain Hardwear)

Vaude Explorer Castle 6 Man Tent ($600 USD)

The Vaude Explorer Castle is the most affordable of the three and is a top rated 6 man tent. This German producer of mountain sports gear designs and manufactures some amazing and reasonably priced tents. The Explorer features one straight entrance door, one child entry (yes, a smaller door), an inner tent that fits four to six people, large base tent with great storage to space ration, and this tent even includes a footprint to protect it from abrasions. Shaped like a castle, flags and all, families are bound to love this 6 man tent and talk about versatile. The front entrance can unzip and be used as a sunshade. This tent is truly a mark of great German engineering.

Kelty Shiro 6 Man Tent – 3 Season ($650 USD)

Significantly less expensive than the Satellite 6 Man Tent, the Kelty Shiro is more like a portable home. A middle area for storage of bikes and other large items, two removable sleeping compartments, an attachable carport and car tarp for mobility and versatility, and three rooms, makes the Kelty Shiro one of the top most affordable 6 man tents on the market. If you are simply searching for something with tons of space, storage, and a cozy feel, this is the tent for you. Winner of the 2009 Camping Life Award, the Kelty Shiro 6 Man Tent has so much more to offer than most with said features as well as additional storage compartments, slip/sleeve construction, mesh wall panels, taped floor seams (water resistant), and a dual common area. It’s a great 6 man tent at a great value.

Mountain Hardwear Satellite 6 Tent-6 Person-4 Season ($2,099 USD)

This 6 man tent is superior in every way possible to any other like it. I’ve trekked two mountains with this thing (my friend owns it, sadly), and it is the Superman of 6 man tents.

This tent is RUGGED. Designed with a double wall, expedition style, the Satellite is built to withstand abuse during summit climbs. This 6 man tent exhibits a full coverage fly with a front vestibule, which distributes wind load. If you are simply camping, it may not be necessary, and if you can afford it, why not take this baby for all that it is. One hundred percent watertight, and UV resistant indestructible, you would be safe from wolves in this thing (not really).  Dome shaped, and resembling more of an Antarctic igloo, the Satellite is everyone outdoorsman’s dream tent.

Verdict

If I were to choose a 6 man tent out of these three, it would most definitely be the Moutnain Hardwear Satellite 6 man tent because of how durable and protective it is, but at $2000 dollars, I’ll be saving my money for a while. Each of the three offers their own great features. These are not the cheapest on the market, simply the best. Look forward to my write up on the cheapest 6 man tents on the market soon.

I'll take the Kelty. Sounds like you could spend quite some time in a tent like that and be quite comfortable.

A portable home! I can dig that. Too bad the camping season is coming to an end for me. Maybe next year I will retire my tattered tent and get a new one. Good hub.

@Maolaun, not too cold for the Satellite! Have $2000 dollars? Haha!
